Acne rosacea is a bit different disease than Acne vulgaris. Unlike the latter, this disease affects mainly the central part of the facial skin. It is anticipated that at present more than 45 million people are suffering from rosacea worldwide. It affects people having fair skin of mostly northwestern European region. It has a nickname. In Ireland, it is called the ‘curse of the Celts’.

Acne rosacea affects lower third of the face, giving rise to constant redness over the areas of the face and nose that “blushes”, mainly the forehead, the chin and the lower half of the nose. Telangiectasia occurs over this part. Small blood vessels present in these areas dilate, and are visible over the skin.

It is seen almost completely in the adults. In some cases, it is seen occurring in those persons below 30 years of age. Women are affected more than men are. However, the worst case of rosacea occurs in men.
Acne rosacea is characterised by occurrence of erythema (red skin), telangiectasia (described earlier) and pustules (pus containing swelling) over the skin surface. However, unlike Acne vulgaris, it is not associated with blackheads or whiteheads and rosacea seldom appears over the chest or back.

Persons experiencing flushes or blushes are more prone to rosacea. It is seen that persons with rosacea initially experience long standing and distinct flushing reaction. It may be in response to emotional factor, alcohol, heat, hot drinks or spicy food. As the disease advances, the flush sustain for longer period of time. In the last stage, it may become perpetual. Papules, pustules and telangiectasia get lay over the persistent flush.

Rosacea of very long duration can be a precursor of other connective tissue disorder like Rhinophymoma. Other ophthalmic connective tissue disorders like blepharitis, iritis, and keratitis also complicate rosacea. These ophthalmic disease demands urgent evaluation by a qualified eye surgeon.
Researchers have seen that, about 70% of patients having rosacea had said their condition had lowered their self-esteem, and 41% told it restrained themselves to social gathering.

As you see, Acne rosacea can give you ugly face, one must consult dermatologist should he see the following signs over his face-Redness over the cheeks, chin, nose or forehead.
Tiny visible blood vessels over any part of face. Watery or itchy eyes.

Acne rosacea can be treated by applying ointment over the area or taking some medicine orally. Initial stage of the disease usually responds to Metronidazole cream or Sodium sulfacetamide cream. More severe cases have need of oral Tetracycline capsules. Residual telangiectasias respond well to laser therapy.
