Facts About Baby Acne
Baby acne is very common, about 20% of newborn babies are infected with this skin condition. Sometimes they occur just after birth but often the babies are infected a few weeks afterwards. The pimples may appear on the face, on the forehead or even on the back. Sometimes there are tiny bumps on the face of the baby which disappear after a few weeks. These are called milia and have no relation with acne.
Baby acne may be caused by some skin irritation,by some medication used or consumed by the mother during pregnancy or due to some medicines taken by the baby. This is also caused by various hormones passed on to the baby from the mother, before birth.
Baby acne may cause small whiteheads surrounded by reddish skin. If the baby is irritated for some reason or is unwell, then these pimples or rash may increase. The baby’s towels and other clothes should not be washed with any strong detergent as this may irritate the skin.
The baby’s face should be carefully cleaned from saliva or milk. The face should be regularly cleaned with water and mild soap. You should not apply any oils, creams or other medications as this are likely to worsen the situation. In the winter,use less moisturizers and creams. Never cover up the baby too much as it may lead to heat rash. This will worsen
the acne.
Too much washing may irritate the baby’s skin. You can wipe the baby’s face with a wet cotton. Never scrub the skin. Baby acne is generally cured within a few weeks. But if it still persists after three months you may consult your doctor.
So, baby acne is a common ailment and you need not worry much about this. What you need is patience as the symptom will go away in a few weeks time.
